Serena Williams, still the favourite at Wimbledon 2010
As far as this season’s grass court Grand Slam Tournament is concerned, a final featuring William’s sisters won’t be the case for sure. However, Pironkova versus Kvitova still stays a prospect. Wimbledon's last four players from the women side will get the charge of the world’s dignified tennis floor on Thursday.
The top seeded Serena Williams will meet Petra Kvitova who is an un-seeded player where as Vera Zvonareva, the twenty one seeded tennis sensation will face another un-seeded player Tsvetana Pironkova.
According to Serena Williams, “ Over the last few years, a lot of fresh athletes and faces have come to the limelight which is healthy sign for the game of tennis as it adds an extra anticipation for the sports lovers”.
The list of final four players does not include the name of five times champion of the grass court Grand Slam event, Venus Williams. Hence, the final of this edition’s Wimbledon won’t feature sister’s battle for the first time after a period of three years.
A number of other players who departed even prior to the semi final matches include Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova as well as Justine Henin. Still in debate are a total of four female athletes with a joint number of twelve big tournaments as well as three grass court Grand Slam trophies. Each possessed by Williams.
The sixty two ranked Kvitova, the number twenty one Zvonareva as well as eighty two listed Pironkova were a joint 12-13 lifetime in London prior to this year. Not even a single player out of them has ever made her way into the finals of a Grand Slam Tournament and the interesting thing is that two of the players might reach it this time.
So the question is that what’s wrong with the top seeded players this season at the All England Club?
Where are they heading?
“You definitely cannot make it to the quarters or semis with a stroke of luck, so undoubtedly these players have the potential to beat the top seeded tennis stars repeatedly if they perform well. What is missing at the moment is the inconsistency of these low ranked players so they need to work on it”, said Kim Clijsters.
“However, it definitely feels great watching fresh faces performing well in the major Tournaments” she added.
It is slightly a time to begin hoping for startling performances in the world of tennis.
Back in 2006, Samantha Stosur along with Francesca Schiavone was seen as the French Open finalists for the very first time. However, both the players later on fell down in the initial contests of Wimbledon.
However, the top seeded survival Serena Williams still believes that even this year’s grass court Grand Slam title still belongs to her and she will put all her effort and energies to grab it at the All England Club.
Along with Serena, there are three more contesters who are striving to win and have fairly equal prospects like Williams for sure.
However, on player who believes that Williams has more chances is none other than the player from Czech Republic namely Kvitova and suspects her own talent by saying that she still cannot match William’s class and greatness.
The twenty years old Kvitova has already defeated the third seeded Caroline Wozniacki, the number fourteen Victoria Azarenka as well as the twenty three ranked player Zheng Jie along with her quarterfinal blow to Kaia Kanepi in this tournament.
However, Pironkova on the other hand is even less hopeful as she started off the championship with a wish to triumph in a match or two.
As far as the top seeded Williams is concerned, she definitely has more experience along with the class to win this season’s Wimbledon title as well.
