Serena Williams: “I have so much more I want to create for the history” – Tennis News
World number three, Serena Williams, is definitely the best player in the business at the moment. She might not be the top ranked player but enters the arena as an unofficial favourite in every contest. There is no doubt about
her class at all.
Recapping one of the most successful seasons of her career, Williams talked about 2012, “It's just been fabulous. I never expected to win all these titles. I never thought I would even come close to breaking those records. But
if I can play consistently and play some more matches at Wimbledon, then it will be awesome. If I could win two a year, it would be great. We'll see. I feel like even though I'm 30, I feel so young and I've never felt as fit and more excited and more hungry.”
With an ambition in her mind, the 31-year-old legend stated, “I have so much more I want to create for the history.” Williams dropped the opening set of the US Open Championship in New York but bounced back emphatically well to
beat the top seed from Belarus, Victoria Azarenka. She rallied twice from a break down state to win the second and third set. Martina Navratilova was so impressed by the tremendous performance of the American superstar that she tweeted after the clash, “Well
done @serenawilliams. What a gutsy comeback in the third set. You are catching me and Chris, and I don't like it.”
Seven titles with just six losses in the entire season is a tremendous record for anyone. Out of those six losses, Williams withdrew due to injury on three occurrences so technically, she was just defeated the courts for three
times in the entire year. She added two more Grand Slam titles to her tally, Wimbledon and the US Open, and now holds 15 Major titles which is the highest number of Grand Slam trophies won by a woman athlete in the history of tennis. She also clinched the
missing singles gold medal at London Olympics to complete a Career Gold Slam and enter the list as the second woman to accomplish that milestone; first one being the lady of Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf.
She will start her bid for the top rank in the Australian Open next season and probably look to improve her total Grand Slam tally to 16. At the moment, the 31-year-old powerhouse is at a 12 match unbeaten streak.
