The BET Awards were established by the Black Entertainment Television network in order to honour African Americans and other minorities in the fields of music, acting, sports and other categories of entertainment which take place over the year. It is a major achievement to be a part of these awards, and for the sportswoman category of the year, there was none better than Serena Williams to whom this title should have been awarded to.

Over the years, Serena William’s fantastic tennis skills have enabled her to overshadow the world of women’s tennis. Recently, she broke the previously set record, by Justine Henin, for the most prize money won over a period of one year, by a female tennis player. Not only has this world class tennis player worked to improve her own career but she is also an active philanthropist and is deeply committed towards helping others. She frequently visits schools and hospitals and sets up tennis clinics for at-risk youth. In 2008 Serena funded the construction of the Serena Williams Secondary School in Matooni, Kenya.
