Serena Williams ambitious for more Grand Slam glory – Tennis Special
World number three, Serena Williams, is looking forward for more Grand Slam titles in the upcoming season. She enjoyed a successful 2012 season after capturing the Wimbledon Championship crown and the US Open title. She also grabbed a gold medal at the London
Olympics and completed her Career Golden Grand Slam.
The American icon started her 2012 campaign outside the Top 10 at the Brisbane International. However, she went on a 17-match killing spree on clay courts and was unbeaten on grass courts. Williams then mustered her season further by capturing her 15th
Grand Slam title at the Flushing Meadows in the second hard court season and cruised past her entire opponents in straight sets to conquer the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships.
"I definitely think I can improve some more," Williams commented in a press conference.
The former world number one is bidding to break Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova’s record of 18 Grand Slam titles. She commented further, “The day I feel that I can't improve, I think that's the day I should probably hang up my racket."
Williams did not find much success in the opening few months as she pulled out from the Brisbane International and made a fourth round showing at the Australian Open after losing to Ekaterina Makarova.
She lifted her game in the clay season and captured her first title of the season at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston. The American maintained her intensity and extended her winning run, eventually capturing the Mutua Madrid Open title and crushing the
Ukrainians in their Fed Cup clash.
However, Williams suffered her worst Grand Slam loss at the French Open where she exited to Virginie Razzano in the opening round.
The American star was devastated after her loss in Paris but rebounded in the grass court season. She triumphed over her entire rivals with ease and conquered the Wimbledon Championships. Williams stunned second seed Victoria Azarenka and third seed Agnieszka
Radwanska to capture the title.
She kept her momentum rolling at the London Olympics and without losing a single set, the American captured the gold medal. She breezed past her fellow former world number one Maria Sharapova with a bagel in the final showdown.
The veteran high-spiritedly entered the Flushing Meadows and cruised to the title-round without losing a set. She lost the second set but remained calm, eventually stunning the world number one Azarenka.
Williams captured her first title here at 17-year-old and after 13 years, she conquered it again.
“Oh my god," Williams was quoted in an on-court interview after grabbing the title. "I honestly can't believe I won. I really was preparing my runner-up speech, because I thought, 'Man, she's playing so great.'”
The 31-year-old is now 31-1 win-loss since her exit from Paris. Williams is eyeing to dominate the WTA Premier Rankings once again and with her current run of form, she can easily succeed.
