Serena Williams among preliminary US Open field
Serena Williams has been named among the provisional field for the US Open, despite being laid low for the bulk of the summer hard-court season after cutting her foot on a broken glass in a restaurant earlier this month.
The world No. 1 has now undergone surgery on the injury and has withdrawn from tournaments in Istanbul, Cincinnati, and Montréal leading into the year’s final Grand Slam but is currently listed among the contenders at Flushing Meadows.
But with the US Open getting underway on August 30th, Serena faces a race against time to regain fitness in time for the event, and assuming she does so, will arrive in New York without the desired match practice under her belt.
The women’s singles field for the 2010 US Open, as announced by the USTA, consists of 99 of the current top-100 ranked women, with Justine Henin the only top-100 player who has so far confirmed she won’t be participating in the event.
Henin, who has twice been crowned champion at the US Open, will miss this year’s event with an elbow injury she suffered in her loss to Kim Clijsters in the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Clijsters, whose victory at Flushing in 2009 just three tournaments into her comeback was the feel-good story of the tennis year, is set to return to defend her title, and past champions Venus Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova are among those who we can expect to see at the US Open this year.
