Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters qualify for Doha
World number one Serena Williams from the United States of America along with the 2010 United States Open champ Kim Clijsters became the third and the fourth contenders to successfully qualify for the singles competition at the
WTA event in Doha on Saturday, joining the Pan Pacific winner Caroline Wozniacki as well as Vera Zvonareva from Russia in the elite eight field of the year ending competition.
Stacey Allaster who is the CEO and Chairman of the of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour while commenting on the qualification of Serena and Kim said on Saturday said that he is happy as their induction in the season ending event will
help in gaining greater attention from the world of tennis.
"I congratulate both Serena and Kim for qualifying for the WTA Championships and am glad that fans all over the world will have the opportunity to watch these two incredible players compete for the coveted title in Doha," he added.
The American tennis player, Serena Williams who is currently ranked number one in the world by the Women tennis professionals, has successfully qualified for the WTA event on the second occasion and is heading to Doha as last year’s
winner. The American has so far captured a total of two trophies in 2010, both Grand Slam, at the Australian Open in Melbourne and Wimbledon, bringing her major haul to thirteen. She was also a finalist in Sydney.
The Belgian tennis ace, Kim Clijsters on the other hand, who is also a former top ranked player has won a total of four crowns in 2010, including her recent United States Open title in New York, two Premier titles at Cincinnati
and Miami and a single International trophy at Brisbane.
Clijsters is really excited to take part in Doha competition which is going to be her first event since winning the year’s final title in Flushing Meadows.
"A year into my comeback, this is a great achievement to me. It is certainly a personal highlight and goal of mine. I have never been to Doha so it will be exciting to travel there as it is a place I would like to see and learn
about,” added the Belgian.
Only a year since returning to the professional game of tennis after a two years break, Kim has registered her name as the fourth player from the women’s side to qualify for Doha and will try to capture her third season-end crown,
having previously won the title back in 2002 as well as in 2003. This season marks Kim’s seventh year ending competition appearance, the first since 2006.
