Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova all set to compete for the Olympics gold medal-Tennis News
American tennis ace, Serena Williams, is eagerly waiting for her first Olympic singles gold medal final after she stunned the Belarusian tennis star, Victoria Azarenka, in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. She is ready to pin down
the Russian beauty, Maria Sharapova, in the final of the London Olympics on Saturday at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
Williams is in excellent run of form this season and plonked the world number one in mere 63 minutes. She believes that Olympics have been her best experience at Wimbledon this season. She is now quiet contended with her
performance because she can regain her world number one spot. The 30-year-old has won 33 out of her last 34 matches. From her last 12 matches out of which she secured straight sets victories in 11 against all the top five tennis women.
In a press conference, she told the media, “I'm just enjoying myself. It is just a great vibe to have the USA fans and all the other countries' fans that come out and root is hard.”
Earlier this season, Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title to end the drought of her Grand Slam titles and took her tally to 14. However, she will have to face tough competition at the hands of the Russian leading woman,
Sharapova, who will be competing in the Olympics final for the first time.
Williams is enthusiastic to meet Maria in the finals match and is confident of her victory over the 25-year-old. Currently, she leads the head-to-head series by 8-2.
In a press conference, she told the media, “It will be interesting. She's ranked higher than I am so, again, I have nothing to lose.”
The third seeded Russian won the All-Russian semi-final match against the world number 15, Maria Kirilenko, in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
In a press conference she said, "Well it's incredible, not only to be part of this event and be an Olympian, but to put yourself in with an opportunity. It is a nice feeling. I've been really fortunate to win all the grand
slams and obviously this is my first Olympics so I'm just thrilled to be in the finals."
For many, the world number four is the leading favourite for the Olympic medal. Williams is also desperate to secure an emphatic start to her extinguishing tennis career.
