Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova eager to win 2013 Brisbane International – Tennis News
After undergoing yet another surgery, world number three, Serena Williams, claims to be fully fit to dominate 2013 Brisbane International field. Huge concerns were upheld by tennis fans and tournament organizers in Brisbane, Australia,
regarding the participation of Williams and the world number two, Maria Sharapova. However, both of the top athletes have made it crystal clear that they are ready to be a part of the season-opening tournament and are eager to take off the new season with
a title win in Brisbane.
Sharapova had to participate in an exhibition match in Seoul, South Korea, against the other former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, on Friday. However, a strain in her neck muscle during practice hampered her from taking
a part in the event. This also raised further questions on her Brisbane International campaign but the Russian diva has assured the officials that she will play the tournament with her 100 per cent physical fitness.
No doubt Williams has been the most dominating player of the 2012 WTA season and she eyes to carry on her winning impetus in the upcoming circuit as well. She arrived in Brisbane on Friday and re-assured her fans that her minor
feet surgery cannot force her to pull out of the tournament. Despite of the world number one, Victoria Azarenka, and the second ranked Sharapova in the tournament field, Williams is rated as the hot favourite for winning the title.
"It feels great to be back in Brisbane," Williams said. "The foot is better. It is really good - it's come through fine."
Sharapova has also re-scheduled her arrival in Brisbane after her neck injury and cited to reach the venue on Friday, two days ahead of her earlier plan.
"We are certainly looking forward to seeing her arrive," tournament director, Cameron Pearson said. "But her health is the most important thing so we want to see her fit enough to play."
With all the eyes fixed on Williams and Sharapova, and their injuries, it seems like the top seeded Azarenka has been forgotten. She will certainly come hard at all the other participants and take off her New Year campaign with
a championship title in Brisbane.
