Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will kick-off 2013 season at Brisbane – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, will take off her 2013 WTA season from the Brisbane International championship in Australia. The US Open winner has committed to feature the season-opening tournament at the hard courts
of Brisbane, along with the Russian beauty queen Maria Sharapova.
Williams has been the most belligerent player in the running professional circuit, winning six WTA championship titles so far. She recently claimed yet another US Open crown after disposing of the world number one, Victoria Azarenka,
in the final showdown at Flushing Meadows. Her presence at the Brisbane International will certainly make the playing field more competitive and her sublime run of form will also intimidate a number of other contenders.
"It helps me prepare. I get a great tournament -- tough field," she said of the season-opening event.”I had so much fun this year but unfortunately it ended fast for me with the disaster of an injury. I want to do well there (in
Brisbane)."
Williams was the quarter-finalist in Brisbane this year but unfortunately, had to pull out of the competition due to a left ankle sprain. She will certainly desire to get her hands on the title next season to gain some early momentum.
Reigning world number two, Sharapova, will also feature the Brisbane International tournament and will be seen in action against the other top contenders for come nail-biting matches. The 2012 French open winner is very excited
to play this event and get tuned up for the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Australian Open, right after that.
"Going into Australia after a long off season you always want to have the best possible matches," said Sharapova about her participation.
The Russian diva didn’t play the Brisbane International this year and took off the season with her Australian Open voyage. She fell to Victoria Azarenka in the title match, frittering away the golden opportunity to clinch another
Major trophy. Sharapova intends to take on the challenge in Brisbane next year and get warmed up for the following Australian Open campaign to produce much better results in the coming 2013  season.
