Serena Williams announces debut appearance at 2012 Brisbane International – Tennis News
Serena Williams will be making her debut appearance at the Brisbane International Open which will be hosted at the Queensland Tennis Centre from the 1st to the 8th of January next year.
The former world number one is looking forward to competing at Brisbane and is very excited, she said, “Well, I never played in Brisbane and I have never been to Brisbane but I have heard great things about it”
The thirteen time Grand Slam champion has had a topsy turvy year and even though, she was unable to bag a major title, she had a great hard court season. Following, a run of the mill grass court season in 2011 with a fourth round
exit to Marion Bartoli at Wimbledon, Serena failed to defend her title and nose-dived out of the rankings all the way to world number 171.
Nevertheless, she eventually made her way back into the top 50 and later to world number 12! Serena gave it her best on the hard courts as she won the titles at the Bank of West Classic in Stanford and the Rogers cup in Toronto.
In addition, she also managed to defeat many famous names like the reigning world number one Caroline Wozniacki during the semi final. However, in the title match of the US Open she lost to Samantha Stosur and became a runner up.
Williams will be joined by many top ten WTA players at Brisbane International, such as; Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Samantha Stosur, Ana Ivanovic and many more.
Tournament Director Cameron Pearson said, “This is the ultimate endorsement of the event, Serena is arguably one of the best female tennis players in history and the fact that she has chosen to play in Brisbane just demonstrates
the reputation the event has built with players on the tour.
The American is considered to be one of the greatest women of tennis of all times. She is placed ninth on the all-time list with 27 Grand Slam titles, and has recorded 13 Grand Slam singles titles, 12 in women’s doubles, and two
in mixed doubles.
Since Martina Hingis in 1998, Williams is the fifth woman on record to have held all four Grand Slam singles titles simultaneously and also the first woman, along with sister, Venus, to hold all four Grand Slam doubles titles at
the same time.
One can clearly agree that Serena Williams completely changed women’s professional tennis and is a laureate, even after extended absences; she has managed to come back as a champion.
