Serena Williams announces end to 2010 season
World number two Serena Williams has confirmed that her 2010 season is over, having withdrawn from the Fed Cup Final in Belgium and the WTA Championships in Doha.
Williams, who was recently bypassed in the ATP rankings by Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, has been out of contention since suffering an unfortunate injury this summer.
In July, weeks after claiming her fourth Wimbledon title without dropping a set in the tournament, Williams stepped on a piece of glass in a restaurant in Munich.
The incident was cause for the American star to have surgery on a tendon in her foot. She was forced to pull out of several tournaments, including the US Open last month.
"It is with deep frustration that I am withdrawing from the WTA Championships at Doha and the Fed Cup Final," said Williams, who has yet to recover from the foot injury. "Pushed by my desire to return to competition, I trained too hard too soon and re-store
the tendon in my foot. As a result, [Monday] morning I had to have another procedure to repair it. I thank everyone for their continued support during this difficult time and look forward with strength and determination to getting back on the court."
13 Grand Slams won since 2002
The 29-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable career since winning the French Open in 2002, a year in which she also won at Wimbledon and the US Open, becoming world number one in the process. This year's win on the grass in London added a 13th Grand Slam title
to her achievements.
Williams' absence from the ATP Tour in the second half of the current season led to Wozniacki, who has yet to win a Grand Slam, overtaking her in the rankings.
The Dane's ascendance had caused criticism of the rankings system, which is thought to disfavour players that are absent due to injury.
