Serena Williams apologizes for arrogant behaviour at 2011 US Open final – Tennis News

Former world number one, Serena Williams of the United States, finally apologized to her tennis fans for her rude behaviour to the chair umpire, Eva Asderaki, in the final of the Grand Slam tournament against Samantha Stosur.
Serena wrote on her twitter account on Wednesday that she was overwhelmed by her emotions in the big match and she got lose at the umpire.
“My emotions did get the best of me this past weekend when I disagreed with the umpire,” Williams tweeted. “It has been a long road to get back to the US Open this year, and I am thankful to have had such a great two weeks in New
York.
After dropping the opening set to Stosur in the final, Serena was facing a break point the first game of the following set when she hit a fierce forehand to the opponent’s court, yelling a loud “Come on!” before even Stosur hit
the ball. Asderaki took notice of the loud call from the American and applied the hindrance rule to award the point to Stosur, stating that Serena yelled before her opponent had executed the stroke. The American was also fined two thousand US dollars for the
umpire decision.
Williams was absolutely furious on the umpire’s decision and the former champion threw a number of insulting remarks on the chair umpire. Her Wednesday’s tweet shows no apologize to Asderaki, whom she said, “I hate you”, when Stosur
was awarded the point.
The Australian competitor went on to beat all the odds and clinched victory at 6-2, 6-3, to bag her first Grand Sam title at the US Open. Stosur is now the first Australian to lift a Grand Slam trophy since Evonne Goolagong bagged
the Wimbledon Championships way back in 1980.
Serena came to the US Open as the hot favourite for taking the title, despite the fact she got sidelined from professional tennis for almost a year because of a career-threatening foot injury. The American clinched two singles
championship victories before coming to the US Open and made her all way to the final of the last Major of the running year.
The American outplayed a number of top class players, including Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 16th seed Ana Ivanovic, third ranked Victoria Azarenka and then the world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, en route to the final
of the mega event. She was stunned by the outstanding performance of Stosur and anxiety got the better of her under the pressure of defeat. Her behaviour in the final was greatly disliked by all of the tennis fans and she was eventually forced to put up an
apology two days later on Wednesday.
