Serena Williams beats Eleni Daniilidou to clear round two - Southern and Western Open 2012
World number four, Serena Williams, bounced over the 29-year-old Grecian qualifier, Eleni Daniilidou, in her opening encounter at the Southern and Western Open in Cincinnati. She won the match in the straight sets 6-3, 6-4 but
it wasn’t a convince triumph according to the 30-year-old American.
Serena Williams commented afterwards, "I had 44 unforced errors. That's shocking. It's unprofessional. Hopefully I clean up my act for my next match. She moved really fast and was getting everything back. It was good for my upcoming
matches."
Answering about the query of her hair troubling her in the match, she commented, “I need to calm it down. It's really big," she commented. "It was a little windy, so it was getting in my face, and I put it in this '80s scrunchie
I happened to have. The look isn't new. I've just let it go super natural and super crazy and not care. It's fun."
Williams has never won it in Cincinnati and commenting about that she said, "See, I have something new to do now!"
The opening set witnessed a quick serve hold for the American courtesy two aces and then a thoroughly deserved breakpoint in the following game following a missed chance earlier.
Scores moved on to 3-0 after a thumping serve hold from the former world number one who struggled a bit in putting away the 121st ranked Grecian courtesy several unforced errors.
However, she still managed to win the opening set; allowing just three serve holds to her foe. It looked like another Williams show and the home crowd was thrilled to see their best superstar in such an ardent run of form.
First four games of the second set went by without a breakpoint but a swap of breakpoints in the following two games definitely ignited some interest from the crowd who were bored from a monotonous game play at the hard courts
of Cincinnati.
Williams broke serve again but not before she sprayed three breakpoints in the same game and that was completely uncharacteristic of her. However, there was no damage done and serve holds for both competitors ended the match in
favour of the American.
