Serena Williams beats Urszula Radwanska in round three - Western and Southern Open 2012
Former world number one, Serena Williams, dumped the 46th ranked Pole star, Urszula Radwanska, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to continue her emphatic run of form and reach the quarter-final stage of the Western and Southern
Open at Cincinnati, USA.
The Pole qualifier was routed in just over an hour and 10 minutes. However, she was able to resist pretty well throughout the encounter but the pace of those thunderous returns from Williams was too much to handle.
Serve holds at both ends were witnessed at the start of the match before an exchange of breakpoints took place. Williams was the first to fall victim to a breakpoint that feature straight four points for the 21-year-old Pole.
It was a cracking start to the encounter but the points were not accrued for long by the American who won the next four points to win a breakpoint back and level the scores at 2-2.
A serve hold at both ends further enhanced the score line to 3-3 and another swap of breakpoints pushed the scores to 4-4. It looked like the swinging games will most probably enforce a tie-breaker round into play but Williams
was too much experienced to allow the youngster that much leverage in the set.
She held her serve and won a breakpoint in the 10th game of the set to bag the opening set with ease.
Radwanska commenced the second set in an emphatic fashion. She broke serve twice on the trot to take a resounding lead of 3-0 upfront. However, the comeback from the American was world class as she won six games in a row to hold
her opponent.
Agnieszka Radwanska won her encounter and commented about her younger sister stating, "They've played so many times the last couple of weeks - I think the third time. My sister's like, 'Why do I always have to play Serena? The
draw is so big, and it's always Serena.' But yeah, there's really no way to change things like that.”
She further added, "Ula was playing really great tennis here. It was her fifth match of the week. Sometimes the fifth match is the final, so for sure she wasn't that fresh. But losing against Serena can even be a good experience.
I don't know what she's going to say about the match after, but I think she really played well."
Serena Williams lock horns with the fifth seed Angelique Kerber in the quarter-finals.
