Serena Williams blasts through Victoria Azarenka to reach the golden final – London Olympics 2012
Invincible fourth seed American, Serena Williams, showed no holds barred against the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, on the eve of Friday. She dispatched the top seed in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to reach the final of
the London Olympics that will be contested on Saturday.
In the ten battles that have been seen between the two athletes, the 30-year-old American has won nine of them including this and lost just once in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami in 2009. Such is the class of the
fourth ranked American. She can dismantle anyone and everyone at any surface on any given day given that she is 100% match fit.
The 23-year-old Belarusian was pumped down in the second game of the match courtesy a breakpoint. The brutal combat continued between the two players but the American was the clear cut dominating athlete. She bombarded the barrage
of winners to power down the number one player in the world.
Azarenka drowned to a trail of 1-4 and soon witnessed her opponent gobbling up another breakthrough in the sixth game that completely forced her out of the first set contest. She had to break serve back in the following game to
keep the set alive but she could only win a single point and Williams moved on with a set lead under her belt.
At the start of the second set, Williams clasped two back-to-back breakthroughs that helped her post a resounding lead of 4-0. She wasn’t troubled at all on her serves and clasped the remaining two games with ease. It was another
commanding performance from the American superstar.
Williams commented afterwards, "When you play the best in the world, you have to play better. That's what I did. I warmed up probably five times waiting for the match before me to finish, but I can wait with the best of them -
I've been waiting my whole life. I have a lot of patience. That's the only thing I have patience with though."
Talking about her fellow finalist, Williams said, "I really look forward to playing Maria. I haven't played her in a while. We always have good matches. She has improved so much. It will be interesting. She's ranked higher than
I am so, again, I have nothing to lose."
Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will lock horns for the gold medal on the eve of Saturday.
