Serena Williams books a berth in the semi-final of WTA Championships – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, who is the unofficial hot favourite to clinch the WTA Championships title, has already booked a berth in the semi-final of the tournament. On Wednesday, she ousted the eighth ranked Chinese
superstar, Li Na, in a tight two-setter. She had to bounce back from a trail of 1-4 to win the opening set in a tie-breaker round. However, the second set proved a bit of a formality as the 31-year-old American eased past her rival with the scores of 6-3.
Commenting about Li Na, Williams said at the end of the contest, “Before winning a Grand Slam she was really hungry and wanted to do well, but she hadn't been able to cross the border, so to say. But I think now she has a lot of
confidence because she has that Grand Slam, she's in history for the rest of her life; she's made so many people proud; she's just playing with no fear."
Prior to this contest, Williams played the fifth ranked German star, Angelique Kerber, in the first Round Rubber contest and defeated her in straight sets as well. So, it has been a thumping comeback from the third ranked American
who is the hot favourite for the title at Istanbul.
With two wins out of two matches, Williams grabs a spot in the last four stage of the contest. However, she will play her final Round Rubber match on Thursday against the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, who is expected
to defy the odds and beat the big gun to cement her chances of qualifying for the last four round of play.
Talking about the tie with Azarenka, Williams said, “Azarenka has been playing so well this year. I'm going to have to play better than I did in the first two rounds. But I feel like I have nothing to lose and as long as I can
relax a little more I will be better.”
Williams has won two Grand Slam Championships this season including the Wimbledon and the US Open. She has also become the second woman in the history of tennis to complete a Career Gold Slam by winning the gold medal at London
Olympics. Everything is going her way at the moment and it will be interesting to see how far she can go with the current form. For the time being, she remains the top contender for the title at Istanbul.
