Serena Williams breaks into the Top-10 players of the world – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, made her way back into the Top-10 players of the world in the new edition of world rankings issued by the Women Tennis Association on Monday. She has played four tournaments this year,
making a comeback after a major injury lay-off. She was out of action since the last US Open due to undisclosed medical issues.
She commenced her season at the Brisbane International tournament; nailed a couple of players and marched into the quarter-finals but wasn’t feeling well before the encounter with the Slovak beauty queen, Daniela Hantuchova, so
pulled out of the event.
She cruised into the fourth round of the Australian Open at the expense of Austrian contestant, Tamira Paszek, Czech starlet, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, and the Hungarian tennis icon, Greta Arn. However, she became the victim
of the majestic upset by the Russian tennis ace, Ekaterina Makarova.
Her performance in the Federation Cup against the Belarusian side was superb; won both of her encounters and helped her country to sneak ahead into the next round of the World Group II. She had a bit of problem against Anastasia
Yakimova but bounced back after a set down to oust the 25-years-old Belarusian representative.
The record of 10-3 this year shows her sublime form in 2012. It is always difficult to hit the courts after such a long time and straight away produce results. However, Williams is such a class act that she doesn’t feel any sort
of pressure and tries to give all she got in every clash.
Her performance in the Sony Ericsson Open was outstanding until her face-off against the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki. It was the quarter-final clash of the tournament and Williams squander many opportunities that
led to her downfall in Miami. Otherwise, she didn’t drop the single set throughout the tournament and looked one of the strongest contenders to win the title. Her major triumph included the straight sets demolition of the Aussie tennis icon, Samantha Stosur.
She is now ranked 10th in the world; has secured 3830 points and will easily takeover the ninth spot from the Russian tennis icon, Vera Zvonareva, who is struggling in the singles category this season having incurred
several injuries as well. Zvonareva has accumulated 3895 points so far and one better performance from the American tennis icon will help her close down the difference on the Russian.
