Serena Williams breezes past Anna Tatishvili in opening round – Roland Garros 2013
Top seeded American, Serena Williams, crippled the Georgian challenger, Anna Tatishvili, with a bagel at the Roland Garros 2013 on Sunday. She jolted down a 6-0, 6-1 victory against the Georgian to power into the second round at
this Major clay court event taking place in Paris, France.
The world number one, Williams required only 51 minutes to cripple Tatishvili in their first encounter. She reeled off nine games consecutively to pull out the victory and progress at this second of the four Grand Slam events of
the season.
The American veteran was quoted in a courtside interview after conquering the match, "I was nervous - I'm always a little nervous going into first round matches at Slams. This time I wasn't as nervous as I was at other Grand Slams,
though. But for the most part I felt pretty safe and felt good about my game and that if I just do what I did in practice, I'll be okay."
Williams stormed into the Court Philippe Chatrier and went into a six-game killing spree right away, bagging the opener with a bagel.
The 31-year-old maintained consistency in her game in the proceeding set. She got the coveted break in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. After Tatishvili came on the score sheet for the first time in the fourth game, the
American unleashed her skills again and clinched the set with a breadstick.
On the whole, the American icon clobbered a better first serve share of 73 per cent as compared to her rival’s 58 per cent and spectacularly marked 21 out of 24 points on it.
Next in queue for Williams is the local wild card entrant, Caroline Garcia, who dumped the Ukrainian contender, Yuliya Beygelzimer, in straight sets to set-up this match.
Serena’s sister, Venus did not face similar fate as she bowed out to Poland’s Urszula Radwanska in brutal three sets earlier that day.
Venus reflected after exiting from Stade Roland Garros, "I was just in a really big hole... And I have to say she played really well. She didn't make a lot of unforced errors, she kept bringing a lot of balls back and competed
well. I definitely have to give her a lot of credit for that."
The 30th seeded American suffered a 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 4-6 loss at the hands of the Polish starlet.
Radwanska will next take on the German qualifier, Dinah Pfizenmaier, in the round of 64.
