Serena Williams celebrates triumph over Maria Sharapova in women’s singles – London Olympics 2012
Fourth seeded, Serena Williams secured her first ever gold medal victory in the women’s singles with 6-0, 6-1 win over the Russian beauty, Maria Sharapova at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon on Saturday.
Serena becomes the second women to win the Olympic gold medal in addition to all four different Grand Slam titles.  Currently, she also set the record of being the only female professional to attain the number one spot in
both singles and doubles category.
Nevertheless, the world number three, Sharapova, played to the best of her potential but she was of no match to the 14-time Grand Slam title bearer. The 25-year-old told the media, “She wasn’t making many mistakes, not giving
me many opportunities. She served extremely well, found the spots all around. She stays low, hits the ball hard. She’s an extremely powerful player.”
In a press conference after the match, Williams told the media, “I was so focused here. I was serving and I was thinking: 'Serena, this is your best chance to win a gold medal. You're at Wimbledon; you play great on grass,
pull it together, just win this.”
She further added, “It’s a different feeling, as long as you can get a medal at the Olympics, you are going to have it for the rest of your life”.
The 30-year-old champion showed a remarkable “motivational stumble” as it is nearly two month after her removal from the first round of the French Open. However, the U.S. number one quickly recovered from her injuries and
made a breakthrough by securing her fifth Wimbledon title against the Pole number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, giving her an upset by 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
Nonetheless, she was extremely confident to bag home the Olympic gold. Williams’ zeal was unmatchable and proved her fans right by defeating all her competitors in straight sets throughout the Olympic tournament. Many critics
believe that her game plan was classic amongst all the female tennis stars with minimum chances of errors during the matches. The veteran sustained a proactive and an agile approach until the end of the event.
Williams’ next challenge is to win the gold medal in women’s doubles with her sister Venus Williams. The American duo will be competing against the Czech pair Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka. If she secures the next
gold medal then nothing can make her Olympic journey shinier!
