Serena Williams charging up for the Brisbane International – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, will be participating in the Brisbane International held from 30th December 2012 to 5th January 2013. The American professional was affected with chronic foot problem
this week and went under a surgery of both his big toes, which caused a forceful withdrawal from the exhibition event in Thailand.
Director Cameron Pearson told the media in an interview, “She is probably not quite ready for Thailand, but they’ve assured me she will be ready for Brisbane. Serena is the rockstar of tennis. We certainly want to see her in Brisbane
and after talking with her manager I’m 100 per cent confident she will be here. She had a minor procedure done on her toes, which was an ongoing complaint.”
The reigning world number three, Williams, is all set to secure the world number one spot and plans to launch a more aggressive campaign than before. She is the top contender to attain the trophy at the Australian Open 2013. Being
held at the Queensland Tennis Centre, the Brisbane tournament will indisputably tune her up for the upcoming championships.
31-year-old Williams made it to the fourth round of 2012 Australian Open held at the Melbourne Park. Her performance displayed a remarkable trend at the Wimbledon Championships and since the start, as she rallied past the reigning
world number one, Victoria Azarenka in the semi-final and eventually nudged up against the Pole, Agnieszka Radwanska, to lift the coveted title.
She bagged away her victory at the Bank of the West Classic at the hard courts of Stanford and a first singles gold medal at 2012 London Olympics for the first time. Even at her age, the American professional is desperate to clinch
more awards. She won the US Open Grand Slam Championship but was unable to secure the world number one spot as she participated in lesser matches than Azarenka.
Other tennis professionals such as Maria Sharapova and the Belarusian professional, Azarenka, will contest against the American right-hander. The tournament has a history of withdraws attached with it as Williams’ was forced to
pull out from the quarter-finals due to injury.
