Former world number one, Serena Williams, breaks the barrier of Top-5 players in the world with her majestic performance in Rome before she was forced to quit at the semi-final stage due to a back injury.
Williams had a very dismal season last year; didn’t participate in the tournament that followed the US Open in August. She quit tennis to recover from undisclosed medical issues and just played an exhibition match with her elder
sister, Venus, in Colombia before making her first professional comeback appearance in the season-opener at Brisbane.
However, it didn’t take long for the American to discover her form and reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. She helped her country to win the Federation Cup tie against Belarus by winning her two rubbers encounters.
The tour of Miami was another success for the 30-year-old American who squashed everyone in straight sets before falling apart to the Dane number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in the quarter-finals. Her victims included the likes of
reigning US Open champion, Samantha Stosur, who has just lost her fifth rank to the American and dropped to the sixth spot.
Williams started her clay court season at Charleston and just lost 15 games in the whole tournament and bagged her first title of the season. She defeated the sixth seed German, Sabine Lisicki, and plonked the second seed Aussie,
Samantha Stosur, in the advanced stages of the tournament. She registered a crushing straight sets triumph against the ninth seed Czech, Lucie Safarova, in the final to take the crown.
Williams won two rubbers matches against Ukrainian squad as well in the Federation Cup world group playoffs and helped her team to victory. Her major victory came in the Mutua Madrid Open when she bagged thousand points. Her victims
included the Dane superstar, Wozniacki, and the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka.
All in all, it has been a terrific season so far for the American number one who is looking to reign supreme over everyone in the world for the one last time before she says goodbye to the professional tennis circuit. With this
form, she is the strongest contender to accomplish her goals by the end of the season.
