Serena Williams close on registering a unique record in the history of tennis – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, is on the verge of creating a unique history in the world of tennis. She has a chance to win an Olympics gold medal in the singles category at All England Lawn Tennis Club, starting 28th
of July.
She has won all four Grand Slam titles in her career on different occurrences and won the doubles gold medal along with her sister Venus Williams in the previous two editions of the tournament. So, she just needs a singles gold
medal to become the first player ever to win gold medal in both categories as well as all four Grand Slams in a professional career. Her sister Venus also has the chance to perform the heroics at the age of 33 but she is highly unlikely to win a gold medal
whilst the in-form American 30-year-old Serena is the fourth seed contestant and the toughest to beat on the grass surface.
Serena recently won the Wimbledon Championships at the same place where the Olympics will take place. She continued her supreme run at Stanford as well and managed to hold on to her title. There is no doubt that she is one of the
strongest contenders (if not the strongest) for the upcoming gold medal campaign at London.
Talking about her pursuit for singles gold medal at Olympics, Serena stated, “It's great just to be here and to represent our country. The important thing is to do the best I can for the U.S. This year, it is a bit tricky.” While
answering a question about making a history, she humbly commented, “I don't think I knew that. Thanks. No pressure."
While talking about her return to Wimbledon, Serena stated, “It's exciting to be back so soon, usually we have to wait 12 months to walk back on to centre court. For me, I'm going to be really excited to have such a quick turn-around
and get back on the grass where I love to play."
Let’s hope we witness a history in the making at the closing ceremony of the tennis event at London Olympics.
