Serena Williams closing on the top spot – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, might be ranked third in the Women Tennis Association rankings but there is no doubt that she is the best in the business and will drag herself up to the world number one spot again in
the upcoming season. She didn’t have good season in 2011; was surrounded by injuries and had to miss out the bulk of the year especially after the US Open due to undisclosed medical issues. Everyone was eager to know at which level the 31-year-old American
will make a return to the tennis circuit and her performance in the current season has probably shut a lot of critics who were suggesting a retirement for the Career Gold Slam holder.
Williams began her journey outside the Top-10 ranks in 2012 and won two matches at the Brisbane International before withdrawing from the contest due to some medical problem. It was believed that she will struggle to play in 2012
as well but the American tennis icon made a remarkable comeback at the Australian Open; showed her pedigree and clinched three convincing straight set victories before falling out to an un-seeded athlete from Russian, Ekaterina Makarova. It was a sad ending
to a promising campaign but the American didn’t look back and continued the recovery.
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, dumped Williams in the quarter-final of the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami. The 31-year-old won 17 matches in a row before withdrawing in the semi-final of the Italian Open at Rome due
to an injury. She lost to a local player in the opening round of the French Open but returned back with 19 match unbeaten streak which was ended by the fifth seed German star, Angelique Kerber, who defeated her in the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's
Open at Cincinnati.
During the two lengthy winning streaks, Williams won the Family Circle Cup at Charleston, Mutua Madrid Open, Wimbledon Championships, Bank of West Classic and Olympics. It wasn’t the end by any means. The American powerhouse returned
in the US Open and conquered her 15th Grand Slam title of the career there and to put a cherry on the top of such a magnificent year, Williams clinched the Women Tennis Association Championships at Istanbul with and extended her third spell of unbeaten
run to 12 matches.
Let’s hope the good show from Williams continues in 2013 and she reaches the top spot, the place where she belongs.
