Serena Williams commits to play in the Fed Cup 2012 – Tennis News
The 13 time grand slam winner, Serena Williams disclosed her plans to contest in two Fed Cup series in 2012, which is sponsored by the BNP Paribas. In February team USA will be hosting a match against Belarus in the second tier;
the winner of the match will advance to a play off in April.
The last time Serena made an appearance in the Fed Cup was with sister, Venus, where she blazed a trail of a 5-0 victory against Belgium in Delray Beach, Florida. Williams who hasn’t played the Fed Cup since 2007 said, “I am committing
to play in both of the U.S. Fed Cup team’s ties in 2012,” said Williams. “After being physically unable to participate in the last few ties, I am eager to compete in Fed Cup and help my country return to the World Group.”
Williams who is a former Fed cup champion helped USA to win the title during her debut season in 1999, having won all of her previous rubbers; she goes into 2012 with an unbeaten record in the competition. In 2010 after losing
to Belgium and Germany, the Americans suffered relegation, and now in order to get back to the top, they have to start from a tough World Group II clash against Belarus, which is to be played on the home soil at a venue still to be disclosed.
The American captain, Mary Joe Fernandez was looking forward to seeing Miss Williams play and was excited about her commitment to play both of their team’s ties next year, Mary Joe Fernandez said, “Serena Williams is one of the
best players in the history of our sport and I’m thrilled that she has committed to play, her presence both on the court and off will undoubtedly help our team as we attempt to return to the World Group for 2013.”
Following her win in Wimbledon 2010, Serena had faced a combination of injuries and in March 2011 she had suffered a hematoma and pulmonary embolism which had left her lurching in the sidelines for more than a year. However, she
made her come back by winning at Stanford and wants to be in top form in time for the US Open 2011.
