Serena Williams crushes Alona Bondarenko in 1st round – Rogers Cup 2011
Former world number one, America’s Serena Williams flashed past Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko with a bagel at the Rogers Cup 2011, 122nd edition of the Canadian Open held in Toronto, Canada. She barely sweated to register
a 6-0, 6-3 victory over the 26-year-old Ukrainian to book a second round spot on Tuesday.
Currently ranked 80th in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Williams eased past Ukrainian, ranked forty-six places below her, in straight sets on their third meeting. After earning this forty-six minutes success
at the Rexall Centre, the American not only secured a second round spot but also extended lead in the head-to-head series against Bondarenko.
29-year-old American blasted into the opening set as she reeled off all six games in a row through exquisite forehands and backhands from her arsenal of skills. She was never threatened by any breakpoints and converted three out
of four breakpoint chances to her advantage pocket a bagel. Williams clobbered a lower first serve share of 58 percent as compared to Bondarenko’s 63 percent but registered a perfect win on it.
The Michigan native required only a single breakpoint opportunity to clinch in the final set. She founded that chance in the eighth game and duly converted to her advantage to seal the set by winning six games to three. Williams
warded off the only breakpoint faced to keep her entire serves and hammered five ferocious aces to make quick in-roads. She again produced a poor first serve share of 52 percent as opposed to Ukrainian’s 68 percent but earned a perfect win on it as well.
The American is one of the four returning champions in the main draw. She is returning from after year full of injuries. However, she made an epic return as she already won a WTA title at Stanford in July.
"I definitely want to get better on a few things. I want to try to do more and play harder," Williams said after the match. "I would hate to be Grand Slam ready right now, seeing that the US Open is not right now. So I will try
to peak at the right time."
Up next for the African American is the German Julia Goerges who stunned a former world number one Jelena Jankovic with a breadstick to reach this spot on Monday.
Goerges fended off all four breakpoints faced and capitalised on four out of seven breakpoint chances to her advantage to seal the match with a 6-1, 6-3 score line in seventy-one minutes.
