Serena Williams crushes Andrea Hlavackova in the fourth round – US Open 2012
Seeded fourth in the tournament draw, Serena Williams slaughtered the 82nd ranked Czech contender, Andrea Hlavackova, to qualify for the quarter-finals of the US Open 2012 held on the hard courts of
the Flushing Meadows. She defeated the Czech underdog within 57 minutes, stamping her victory with a double bagel.
Serena in a post match interview told the media, “She was fighting really hard. You give people any type of chance, especially in tennis, the match is never over until you shake hands. There is always a comeback available.
So I didn’t want to give her that opportunity — or anyone that opportunity — to try to come back, especially her in particular. She was getting so pumped up and she never gave up. I thought that was really incredibly positive.”
Since the opening set, the Czech professional picked up a sloppy start and she was unable to preserve her initial serve. Williams broke her rivals serve twice, in the third and fifth games, as the game kicked further. She
smoothly progressed forward and closing the game with in the most authority fashion at 6-0.
In the next set, the match repeated exactly similar pattern. The local challenger grabbed all the games in the set and prevailed evenly throughout the contest. Williams secured a complete control over her Czech rival to sustain
her lead and closed the set with her win at 6-0.
The American veteran shelled eight aces on Hlavackova, who could only smash two aces in response. She had a higher first serve accuracy percentage of 67 but clinched just 15 of 36 points on it. She could not even get hold
of the only break point offered to her. On the contrary, Williams had a below than average first serve of 49, bagging 13 of 17 points. Fortunately, she was able to secure six of nine break points in the match.
The American professional secured her comeback after this year’s Wimbledon Champions. She has drastically improved her world ranking, indicating her excellent run of form after winning the gold medal at the London Olympics
2012. The fourth seed American will face the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
