Serena Williams deserved to win the Best Female Athlete at ESPY Awards not Lindsey Vonn
All those, who follow sports’ news regularly, would know that the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Awards just took place recently this month. These Awards are one of the most prestigious events in the world of sports and have been taking place every year since 1993 when they first began. The awards have been created and broadcasted by the American cable television network ESPN. On this grand event, the best individual and team athletic achievements which have taken place during the previous year, are recognised and are given awards.
There is a lot of competition as to who should win the titles given at the ESPY Award ceremony. Thus, choosing the nominees for the ‘Best Female Athlete’ is one of the toughest choices to make. There are a number of deserving women who qualify as the best female athletes but only four made it to the final nominees this year and obviously there was only one winner. The nominees included Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi, Lindsey Vonn and Serena Williams.
These were indeed very fine nominees and all of them are equally talented in their respective sports. However, it was up to the fans to vote for whomever they thought worthy of winning and they chose the talented and gorgeous American Alpine ski racer, Lindsey Vonn.
It would be very bold of fans to say that Serena Williams deserved to win this title and not Lindsey Vonn. Moreover, it would be unfair because the fans themselves are responsible for voting for the winner at the ESPY Awards.
Vonn and Williams are both very capable athletes. The anticipated winner was the American professional tennis player, Serena Williams. She herself had had her hopes high as she had been the one hosting a pre-ESPY party a night before the main award ceremony took place. Also Serena has had an amazing career throughout the previous year. She has been the champion at two Grand Slam tournaments this year, which are the biggest events in the world of tennis, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Overall, she has a total of thirteen Grand Slam singles titles. She has currently been ranked number one in the world for the fifth time and her professional tennis career is at its peak. The prize money won by her is more than any other female athlete out there making her one of the most dominant female athletes in the world.
The endless achievements of Serena Williams make her one of most well-known female athletes all over the world. However, the best female athlete of 2010 award winner, Lindsey Vonn is not far behind in her list of achievements. This alpine ski racer has set a number of records in the history of American ski racing. She has been the first American to have won the gold medal at the Winter Olympics in downhill skiing in 2010. She has also won three consecutive World Cup Championships in 2008, 2009 and 2010 making her the first American woman and second woman worldwide to have accomplished this feat. She has a total of thirty-three World Cup wins in all four disciplines of ski racing (downhill, slalom, Super G and super combined). Her winnings have made Vonn one of the most successful female American ski racers in the country has ever come across. Hence, it would be wrong to claim that Lindsey Vonn should not have won because it is clear that along with Serena, she is also a very triumphant female athlete.
Seeing the achievements of both these athletes, one realises how difficult it is to chose which one is more deserving to have the word ‘Best’ entitled to them. Fate chose to be on Vonn’s side at the night of the ESPY Awards this year and now what is done is done. Serena Williams needs to work hard to keep her game banging and at the top in order to win next year’s title for the ‘ESPY Best Female Athlete’.
