Serena Williams deserves the top rank spot in the world rankings – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, has finally spoken for herself and commented about the confessions made by the second ranked Russian star, Maria Sharapova, and the number one Chinese tennis ace, Li Na. Both these players
chose Williams as the best ever player of the season and replying to their remarks, Williams said, “I think it’s a true statement, without trying to sound full of myself or anything.” She further added, “I always said that if I’m playing well and I’m doing
everything right it’s really difficult to beat me. I still believe that.”
Williams who is now 31 years old still believes that there is no better player at the tennis courts than her and she is absolutely right. The mind-blowing run at Istanbul during the Women Tennis Association Championships clearly
demonstrates her talent and ability. The firepower of Williams is definitely superb and there is no stopping her when she is on song.
In a single week, she manhandled the German number one Angelique Kerber, Chinese tennis ace Li Na, Belarusian top ranked women Victoria Azarenka, Pole superstar Agnieszka Radwanska and her arch rival from Russia, Maria Sharapova.
She didn’t lose a single set throughout the contest. Such is the class of the third ranked American tennis icon who undoubtedly deserves to be ranked top in the world. Unfortunately, the American is still lagging behind the likes of Maria Sharapova and Victoria
Azarenka in the world rankings.
Williams has lost just one match since the start of the Wimbledon Championships. She has grabbed 31 wins and faced just one defeat since June; won five titles including Wimbledon Championships, Bank of West Classic, London Olympics,
US Open and WTA Championships. It has been a world class performance from a legendary tennis icon and she is true about herself. She deserves to be the number one player after such a tremendous run despite facing a major injury layoff in 2011.
In 2012, Williams has gathered 58 wins and fallen to just six athletes of whom two matches were cancelled because the American was injured and one was called off earlier because of an injury-stricken withdrawal. So technically,
Williams has just lost to Angelique Kerber in Cincinnati, Virginie Razzano in the French Open and Caroline Wozniacki in the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami.
Three losses in the entire year is a record itself and the third ranked American truly deserves the top spot in the world rankings without any doubt.
