Serena Williams follows the legacy of Steffi Graff by completing a Career Gold Slam – Tennis News
Two former world number ones, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams, were at the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon, battling it out to become the second women in the history of the sporting tennis to complete
a Career Gold Slam. Undoubtedly, it was the fourth seed American superstar who thumped a bagel in the opening set and allowed a breadstick in the following one to register a record in the history books. Serena Williams, the deserving name to complete a Career
Gold Slam.
The expression of delight was obvious in that ‘Crip Walk’ that followed the majestic battering of the number one Russian women on the 5th of August. She is now the second women to complete a Career Gold Slam alongside
the legendary superstar, Steffi Graff.
Steffi Graff completed her Career Gold Slam with a gold medal in 1988 at Seoul and Williams enters the list after a gap of almost 24 years.
Williams commented on her triumph in the following fashion, "I didn't expect this. I can't even; oh my gosh. I have a gold medal in singles; oh my gosh. I got the gold. I'm just so happy. I don't know what to do. I just feel good
about my game. I've practiced so hard. It was time."
She further confessed, “I've never played better. Playing against Maria you have to be at your best. I knew that. She won the French Open, she never lost this year. She's playing the finals of everything so I knew it was going
to be tough."
The stats for the 30-year-old American are enough to demonstrate her domination at the courts in the recent past. She is the only women in the world of tennis to win gold medals in both categories; singles and doubles. Moreover,
she won the second gold in the doubles category along with her elder sister, Venus Williams, for the second straight edition of Olympics. Such is the class of the former world number one who is gunning to grow points and reach the top rank of the world one
more time.
If her form continues at the year’s fourth Grand Slam Championship, the US Open, she is definitely going to reach the top ranks in the world by the end of the year. She has the ability to do it and the emphatic run of form allows
her to perform the heroics.
