Serena Williams gets protected ranking into 2011 US Open – Tennis News
Serena Williams the former world number 1 player disclosed that she would be using her special injury-protected pass to enter the US Open field. Although with her current ranking, she would not have been allowed to contest for the US Open, but due to a series of health issues Serena was sidelined for more than six months and therefore, has the advantage to use her pass (special ranking) to enter up to eight championships, including a Grand Slam. Only 105 players have been acquiesced a direct entry pass into the tournament, which, commensurate from the 29th of August.
She has been practicing throughout July and on Wednesday, earlier this week she led the Washington Kastles to a victory over the New York Sportimes at Randall’s Island which is just a few miles from the Flushing Meadows of the US Open. Following her victory she said, “I'm feeling good, and with some more matches I will be ready for the US Open and it's a matter of being ready from the first match, gaining the confidence back."
While dining in at a restaurant in 2010, Williams stepped on broken glass and ended up receiving eighteen stitches. The cut foot was a serious injury which required surgery and thus, prevented her from playing any further matches, of the remainder of 2010. She lost her title as world number one to Caroline Wozniacki on October the 11th, 2010. Although she ended the year as ranked fourth in singles, she played only six tournaments and she ranked eleventh in doubles after playing only four championships.
The 29-year-old American has been out of the game for most of the past year. She dropped from world number one to 172 and although she has not contested for a number of tournaments this year, she still managed to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon where she battled it out on a grass court against the number nine seed Marion Bartoli during the fourth round, which she lost. Nonetheless, Williams plans on playing the Stanford, Toronto and Cincinnati championships before her final appearance at the US Open 2011.
Serena Williams is latest and all time fifth player to hold all four Grand Slam singles titles. She was the first women to hold all four Grand Slam doubles titles with sister Venus since Martina Hingis. She is the only active female professional tennis player, who holds the maximum number of Grand Slam titles in singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles.
She holds thirty seven Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour singles titles, thirteen Grand Slam crowns, last but not the least, she holds the record for most aces served by a female at Wimbledon in 2010.
Serena Williams is a laureate in tennis history, a player that inaugurated a new level of power, skill, and technique.
