Serena Williams gusts away Jelena Jankovic in the opener – London Olympics 2012
Tournament favourite, Serena Williams, ousts the former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, in straight sets to begin her campaign at London Olympics. It was hardly a test for the fourth ranked American who clinched the win 6-3,
6-1 and knocked out the 20th ranked Serb out of the competition.
Williams who is in emphatic run of form and already on 12 match winning streak including this triumph will not look to bow down easily. It was the message that was passed upon by the American after a slaughtering the Serb superstar
who looked completely out of touch.
The American fourth seed dropped just eight points on her serve throughout the opening set. It was a commanding performance from the Olympics favourite who didn’t allow a single opportunity to her rival to take hold of the proceedings
in the first set.
Breakthrough was on the cards for Williams right from the word go. However, the Serb was able to hold on to the first serve game after a bit of trouble but couldn’t deprive the American of the deserving breakpoint in the fourth
game that posted a resounding lead of 3-1 to Williams.
Soon, the set was over when the Serb was unable to break serve back and tie the scores. It was on the cards considering the staggering performance coupled with some pathetic returns from the Serb that eased the job for her rival.
The second set witnessed world class domination from the 30-year-old American. First four games went by in a blink of an eye; featuring two breakthroughs for Williams who bagged an unassailable lead of 4-0.
With just one serve hold for the Serb, Williams bagged the win with ease.
After the end of the match Williams told the reports, “I was a little nervous in the first set, but once I got relaxed I played a little better. I actually think I played solid today. I felt the ball well. I missed a few shots,
but at least I was going forward. They asked me if I minded if she sat in my box, and I was like, 'Of course not. Please. It would be my honour.”
She further added, "I mean; I love Michelle. She's so cool. I've met her several, several times. Seeing her there made me feel better and made me want to play better.”
Urszula Radwanska will face the music in the second round of the tournament at the hands of the American.
