Serena Williams injured for the rest of the season
First it was the elder sister Venus Williams who was reported to be injured for the rest of the season and now it is the former world number one Serena Williams who is also done for the remainder of the year.
The agent of the American ace emailed the AP explaining that her foot injury has aggravated and as a result Williams will not be able to play any more this year. This announcement has been made two weeks after Venus Williams confirmed
her withdrawal for the year due to her left knee injury.
Thus, both the Americans will skip the season ending WTA tournament in Doha which is going to start next month along with the Qatar event, as well as the final of the Fed Cup next in San Diego. The American side will play against
Italy in the title battle of the Fed Cup 2010.
The CEO of the Women Tennis Association, Stacey Allaster when commenting on William’s recent announcement said, “Serena Williams is one of the great champions of all time, and she will be missed by her many fans at the yearend
WTA Championships. We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back at full strength for the 2011 season.”
Williams has not played on the tour since July, when she outlasted her Russian tennis foe, Vera Zvonareva in the final of Wimbledon in two sets at the All England Club. The score line was 6-3, 6-2. It was her fourth grass court
Grand Slam title and thirteen overall major singles crown on the tour.
The American injured her right foot on some glass while hanging out with friends at a restaurant in Munich after her Wimbledon win, however she did take part in an exhibition clash on 8th July in Brussels versus the
2010 United States Open winner, Kim Clijsters that was seen by a great variety of crowd. A week later, she went through a foot surgery in Los Angeles.
After announcing her withdrawal from the year’s final Grand Slam, the United States Open in New York, Williams came back on the practice court last month, however then she put off her return by pulling out of the events in Linz,
Beijing as well as Tokyo.
In a statement by the top ranked American, she said, “It is with deep frustration that I am withdrawing from the WTA tournaments at Doha and the Fed Cup Final. In my wish to come back to the tour, I practiced too much too soon
and re-tore the tendon in my foot.”
Earlier in 2010, the professional tennis player from the United States of America skipped all of February, March as well as April due to her knee injury. Overall, she has just played in six singles tournament in 2010, winning two
titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
Williams dropped down from the number one rankings in the world last week as the twenty year old Dane Caroline Wozniacki jumped into the top spot after winning the quarter final in Tokyo. She has not even captured a single Grand
Slam title so far in her career.
In the doubles, the American has won three trophies this season, all with her elder sister Venus Williams. Prior to the injury, the William sisters while talking to the Tennis Association of the United States of America shared
their plans of taking part in the final of the Fed Cup, which is going to be contested next month in San Diego.
Mary Joe Fernandez, who is the skipper of the American Fed Cup team when asked about William sister’s withdrawal, said that the team was looking forward to have them however the American side will definitely miss the two top players
in the final. He further wished both of them a quick recovery.
