Serena Williams is eyeing to defend her gold medal at the Rio De Janeiro Olympics – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, is already planning to defend her gold medal at the next Olympics event taking place after four years in Rio De Janeiro.
After grabbing the gold medal with her sister Venus at the double event, Serena is eagerly waiting to play at the next Olympics taking place in Brazil.
"I plan on being there unless an act of God doesn't allow me to," Williams was quoted in a press conference.
The American number one is committing to play at Rio 2016 unless injuries or some other problems stop her from playing tennis. Williams was ruled out from professional tennis for almost 14 months due to some health issues.
"When I feel I can't be the greatest, I shouldn't play anymore, but I feel I belong. I'm not tired. I'm enjoying myself," said the jubilant American who danced after clinching her singles gold medal. As a result, Williams became
second women after Steffi Graff to complete her career Golden Slam.
"I was so happy to just win. I've been so out of it the last years, (and from) where I was, to come back and win, this is just an amazing thing for me, for all the hard work I've been doing," Williams further commented. "When I
get happy, I dance."
Williams, 14-time Grand Slam singles champion, lost only 17 games to win gold medal at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. This is the fewest number of games lost by any Olympic champion.
Mustering her performance further, the American veteran crushed almost all her opponents with a bagel or a breadstick. In addition to this, Williams slaughtered third seeded Maria Sharapova with a 6-0, 6-1 score line in the final
showdown to grab the medal.
Currently ranked fourth in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Williams plucked her 44th title at the Olympics. As a result, she holds most number of titles amongst active players and 10th
in the Open Era.
The 30-year-old also set a record with her sister, Venus, at the Olympics for holding the most number of gold medals at the men or women’s tennis event. Williams Sisters bagged their third straight doubles title at this event held
in London.
Williams is now looking forward to keep momentum rolling at the US Open, last of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Corona Park, New York City.
