Serena Williams likely to miss rest of 2010 season
Serena Williams released a statement on her official website on Sunday stating that she could miss the rest of the 2010 season due to an injured right foot that has not been able to heal
properly.
Shortly after winning Wimbledon in July, Williams suffered a freak accident after cutting her foot on some broken glass at a restaurant in England. The injury also forced Williams to miss
the U.S. Open. Although there was speculation in September that she was close to returning, Williams had suffered setbacks in her return to the court due to over-training and was forced to withdraw from the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and the China Open in Beijing.
"I am likely out for the year now," Williams said Sunday in a posting on her official website.
"In order not to make this worse, I have to chill on my physical workouts but I will immediately begin rehabbing as soon as I get the Doc's OK. Keep me in your prayers (I need them),"
the posting said.
Williams, who also won the Australian Open this year has only played in six tournaments in 2010 due to the injury. As a result, Williams will lose her No. 1 ranking to Denmark's Caroline
Wozniacki when the new rankings come out on Monday.
Williams also admitted that she kept on pushing to get back on the court, even training as late as Saturday before making a decision.
"I have been training for many weeks to get back to playing tennis as quickly possible since my foot surgery in mid-July," Williams said Sunday on her website. "Yesterday I learned that
I had tried too hard, and did too much too soon. After practising yesterday morning I felt discomfort in my foot and tests by my doctor revealed that I had unfortunately re-strained it."
The announcement by Williams comes just a week after her sister Venus Williams announced that she would be out for the remainder of the 2010 season due to a left knee injury.
