Serena Williams not offended by Caroline Wozniacki’s impersonation of her – Tennis News
American icon, Serena Williams, laughed off the former world number one Caroline Wozniacki’s imitation of her. She believes that the copying was for fun and not racist at all.
Few weeks ago, Wozniacki impersonated the American in an exhibition event in Brazil against Maria Sharapova. She won a game against the Russian after she stuffed her top and bottom in order to look like the curvaceous world number three.
The crowd burst into laughter and cheers with Wozniacki. However, she was criticized for her actions after that. Many people started to take the stint as racist. In addition to this, some critics blasted Wozniacki by emphasizing that she should copy her
serve instead of her body.
The American number one has now come out to support Wozniacki. She believes that her close friend’s impersonation was not racist at all. Williams wrote an email to USA Today and commented,
“I know Caro and I would call her my friend and I don't think she (meant) anything racist by it.”
The former world number one, Williams also commented that impersonation of her was also carried out by her compatriot Andy Roddick and world number one Novak Djokovic before. However, when the Dane mimicked her, she became a racist.
"(Roddick) and (Djokovic) do it all the time and Caro does (it) and now it's racist.??" The American wrote.
Williams now wishes things to become better,
"At the end of the day I spend my time focused on things to become better and not bring me down," she commented further.
The 31-year-old recently underwent with a surgery on her big toes. As a result, she will skip the upcoming exhibition event. However, Williams is eyeing to make a return at the Brisbane International, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings.
The American veteran enjoyed a spectacular season in 2012. She conquered the Wimbledon Championships before cruising past her rivals at the London Olympics. As a result, Williams completed her Career Golden Grand Slam.
Currently ranked 10th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Wozniacki will join the American star in Brisbane. She is seeded eighth at this Australian Open lead-up tournament.
