Serena Williams oust the defending champion in the quarter-finals – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Former world number one, Serena Williams, finally hunted down the defending champion, Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic, in the quarter-final brawl of the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday. The sixth seed American powerhouse formulated
a straight sets victory over the reigning world number four, settling the final score line at 6-3, 7-5, to earn a place in the semi-finals of the grass court Grand Slam event in London, England.
A much tougher battle was anticipated between the two top class performers but the Czech number one was outdone by her error-ridden game play. Fourth seeded Kvitova couldn’t bring out the best of her performance on Tuesday and
was found struggling right from the beginning of the match. She coughed a total of 14 unforced errors to assist Williams to her victory and failed to register even a single break point in the entire matchup to finish on the losing side in the end.
"I think it was a great match from both of us, and I think she just served much better than I did," Kvitova said. "I don't think I played badly, I think she just served very well. In the last game it looked like she did almost
four aces."
Williams once again used her mighty serve as her primary weapon of destruction and never allowed the defending champion to break it in the contest. She belted 13 thudding aces to her opponent’s court and dropped merely five points
on her first serve, clinching 31 out of 36 points, en route to victory. She nailed one break point apiece in the two sets to take the better of Kvitova in a convincing fashion.
"It feels like a good win," Williams said. "I don't know if it was about dethroning the champion or just going out there and doing the best that I could. You can't play a defending Wimbledon champion or Grand Slam champion and
not elevate your game. I had to weed out the riffraff and get serious. It's not easy to defend your first Grand Slam title, either.”
Eyeing for her fifth Wimbledon crown, Williams will face the belligerent world number two, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, in the semi-final draw of the tournament on Thursday afternoon. Second seed Azarenka is yet to lose a set
in the tournament and has pinned straight sets victories in all her encounters so far. She outplayed the surprise package from Austria, Tamira Paszek, in the quarter-finals.
