Serena Williams outclasses Victoria Azarenka to capture the crown – Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2013
American icon, Serena Williams, crushed the third seeded Belarusian, Victoria Azarenka, with a breadstick at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2013 on Sunday. She jolted down a 6-1, 6-3 victory against the Belarusian
top ranked star to grab her 51st WTA title at this clay court tournament held in Rome, Italy.
The world number one, Williams, showed her master class against the Belarusian at the Foro Italico and eventually stole the show. She required one hour and 33 minutes to overpower Azarenka at this WTA Premier
Mandatory event.
"The first three games took about 20 minutes - it wasn't easy, nothing is ever easy," the American veteran stated in a courtside interview after conquering Rome. "I think the difference today was I took the opportunities
when I had them and came up with some really good shots. And this was the best I've moved all week - I feel fit, and hopefully it'll stay like this. Last year I was feeling excellent on clay but didn't do that great at Roland Garros - this year I'm cautious
and I want to work hard and stay focused and win every point I play, and not slack at all."
Seeded number one at this event, Williams stormed into this match by breaking her opponent’s serve twice and cruised to a 3-0 lead. Despite losing her serve in the following game, the American maintained her
intensity and capitalised on another two break chances. As a result, Williams bagged the opener with a breadstick and inched towards her glory.
The American number one kept momentum rolling in the following set. She got the coveted break in the sixth game and jumped to a 4-2 lead. Despite wasting her lead in the very next game, Williams remained calm
and broke the Azarenka’s serve again. She held her serve once again and clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
With this victory, Williams improved to a 12-2 record in the head-to-head series against the Belarusian. She extended her winning streak to 24 matches and maintained perfect record on clay. She captured titles
at the Mutua Madrid Open, Family Circle Cup in Charleston and in Rome. As a result, she became a clear favourite for the French Open.
