Serena Williams outplays Samantha Stosur to grab the title – Rogers Cup 2011
Former world number one but unseeded in the tournament, Serena Williams of the United States, outshined the world number 10, Samantha Stosur of Australia, to bag the women’s championship title at Rogers Cup on Sunday afternoon.
The competition was staged on the hard courts of the Rexall Centre in Toronto, Canada, with the 31st ranked American winning the $2,050,000 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Series title in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. 10th seeded Stosur stood no match for the hard-hitting Williams, succumbing after just one hour and eighteen minutes of play to let her away with victory.
Williams was sidelined from professional tennis for almost a year due to her foot injury and won her second championship title at Toronto on her return. She took a singles championship title at Stanford two weeks ago and is getting into her vintage form steadily.  The American outplayed the world number four Victoria Azarenka in the semis and then went on to defeat another top-10 player to claim the trophy at Toronto.
“I’m so excited. I never expected to do this well,” Williams said about her victory, “I’m just so happy to be playing again, let alone winning. It’s cool.”
29-year-old Williams registered her 15th victory in the running WTA season, disposing off the 10 seeded Aussie in an authoritative manner in the final. Stosur failed to pose any serious challenge to the belligerent Williams, who cruised through the contest with the utmost ease to take the title. The Australian botched to crack in a single serve break in the entire matchup and submitted the matchup to the opponent in straight sets.
“For me to be able to win, I had to play close to my best tennis. I wasn't quite at that mark," Stosur said in her post match reviews. “At 4-all I had 40-15 up on serve. You never want to lose serve, but especially being up in the game and holding quite comfortably until that point, it's very disappointing to lose that. I stepped up to the line every single time and tried to win every single point, but once an opponent gets a certain lead, sometimes it really boosts them.”
Williams cracked in three serve breaks in the entire matchup and fired nine thudding aces to outplay Stosur in the game. She extended her all-time head-to-head record against the Australian by 4-2 after her Sunday’s victory to clinch her second Rogers Cup title.
