Serena Williams overpowers Camila Giorgi in the second round battle – Family Circle Cup 2013
Reigning world number one, Serena Williams, registered an easy victory over the 85th ranked Italian underdog, Camila Giorgi, in the second round of the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday. The American powerhouse took 82 minutes
to wrap up the two-setter at 6-2, 6-3, marching into the third round of the WTA Premier-level tournament in Charleston, USA.
It was yet another easy victory for the defending champion, Williams, who rarely faced any challenge at the hands of the 21-year-old Italian. She displayed her usual aggressive game play and raced through the two sets with the
utmost ease. Williams is in search of her third WTA championship title of the season and is now riding a winning record of 19-2 in the current circuit.
"It definitely wasn't great for me - I played well, but I wasn't great, footing-wise," Williams said. "I was just trying to get my stability. I only had one or two days of practice. But I felt good - I'm glad I came here and hope
I can get ready for what can hopefully be another good clay court season. I've been watching her," she said. "I've played her in doubles before and I think she's a good player. I also saw she did really well at Wimbledon - I knew one day I would play against
her, so I kind of knew how she would play going into the match."
Williams was off to a flyer in the opening set, nailing two early serve breaks to reach 3-0 in not time. Giorgi registered her only break point of the day in the fourth game to cut down the deficit to 2-3 but another cracking break
of serve from the top seeded American in seventh game left her stranded at 2-6.
A more steady start was witnessed in the following set, with the Italian youngster holding her opening two serve games to take the score line to 2-2. Williams shifted her gears from there onwards and stung break points in the fifth
and ninth games to conclude her comprehensive victory at 6-3.
Williams will either face the 15th seed German, Sabine Lisicki, or the local qualifier, Mallory Burdette, in the third round of the tournament.
