Serena Williams plans to play better against Yaroslava Shvedova – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, was tested to her limits in the third round clash against Jie Zheng of China but aced her way in the final set to book a date with the record holder Kazakh starlet, Yaroslava Shvedova.
The 30-year-old American was gutted at her first round exit at the Roland Garros French Open but seems a perfect match for the grass court Grand Slam Championship. She is ranked sixth in the world at the moment and will rise above
the Aussie starlet, Samantha Stosur, if she manages to reach the final four at All England Club, London.
Her next opponent, Shvedova, won 24 points on the trot against the French Open finalist, Sara Errani, to become the first ever women in the 44 year history of women tennis to post a ‘golden egg’. It is a term that is associated
to a player who manages to overpower his opponent without losing a point in the entire set. Shvedova took just 15 minutes to finish off the first set in the third round clash on Saturday.
Williams was asked about her plans to tackle the 24-year-old Kazakh’s onslaught and she mentioned, “I have to make sure I do better," Usually I return well but I hit so many errors off my returns against Zheng. I was just off against
her, although she played unbelievable. I still think I can play better."
She further added, “She's a really good player and she's playing well.” She was talking about Shvedova. She further added, “She does everything really well. She's a solid player. Hopefully I'll be able to win a point in the first
set. That will be my first goal, and then I'll go from there."
It will be interesting to see two well matched players battling it out for a place in the last eight of the tournament. However, considering that Shvedova was the quarter-finalist at the French Open and was leading the current
Wimbledon Champion, Petra Kvitova, 4-2 in the final set before falling apart, it will definitely be a big task for the American number one who is looking to work her way back to the top of the world rankings.
