Serena Williams plonks Olga Govortsova in round two - Fed Cup WG II 2012
Former world number one, Serena Williams, led America to their first win in the World Group II tie against the Belarusian contestant, Olga Govortsova. 30-years-old American pounded the 97th ranked
contestant in straight sets 7-5, 6-0 and stamped her authority; replying her critics with her emphatic performance.
The handicapped Belarusian squad was always an easy tie, especially without the likes of newly ranked world number one, Victoria Azarenka. Williams gobbled up the win and secured 2-0 head-to-head against the 23-years-old
competitor. Earlier that day, Christina McHale dumped Anastasia Yakimova in straight sets to give an initial lead of 1-0 in the tie.
Williams started the proceedings and bagged the first serve game with ease. Govortsova started off in nervy fashion and failed to hold on to her serve game. Williams capitalized on that and bombarded her opponent with rocket
paced serves. She gobbled up the third game of the set to push the lead to 3-0.
Govortsova slowly settled in the atmosphere and broke her opponent’s serve in the fifth game. She levelled the scores at 3-3 and suddenly the match became competitive. No more breakthroughs were witnessed in the remaining
games of the set as the scores pushed to 5-5. Williams was under the cosh with the pressure to deliver being the superior of the two players.
The American held her serve in the next game to exert the pressure back on her opponent. The Belarusian once again trembled under the difficult conditions and her serve game was broken by Williams, which sealed the first
set win for her. Trailing one set down, the Belarusian competitor looked down and out with a monumental task ahead of her; winning the next two sets to win the match.
Second set was pure display of class and domination from the American. She spared no opportunity at all for her opponent to settle down and make any sort of impact. She started the proceedings with a successful serve game
and gobbled up the first breakthrough of the set with couple of eye-startling winners down the line. Such a majestic performance from the American dismantled the confidence of her opponent who lost any hope of registering a comeback in the contest.
Williams was cruising along and dominated the show; she bagged all six games played in the second set and registered the first bagel of the tie. American squad is in commanding position at the moment entering the second day
of the contest with a comprehensive 2-0 lead against the Belarusian team.
