Serena Williams routines past Chanelle Scheepers to reach the semis draw – Bank of the West Classic 2012
Reigning world number four, Serena Williams, hammered a resounding 6-4, 6-0 victory against the unseeded South African contender, Chanelle Scheepers, in the quarter-finals of Bank of the West Classic tournament on Friday’s eve.
The 30-year-old American powerhouse took barely 73 minutes to pin the world number 42 in her usual assertive manner.
Williams took off her 2012 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) season by clobbering Scheepers in Brisbane International and her recent win has given her a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series against the South African. The winner of
this year’s Wimbledon Championships, Williams, is eyeing for her fourth WTA title of the running season and Scheepers proved to be easy bait for her in the round of eight.
It was yet another display of sheer power and exquisite serve game from the top seeded American. She delivered 60 per cent of her first serve on target, firing eight aces to her opponent’s court and winning 24 out of 35 points
on it. Williams also had a phenomenal return game in the contest, as she claimed 21 out of 34 return points on her opponent’s serve and broke her six out of 15 times to come out as the dominant winner. On the other hand, Scheepers squandered seven priceless
break opportunities in the match and could barely register two serve breaks to finish on the losing side in the end.
The contest took off with successful serve holds from both sides in the opening four games, followed by a trade of break points to drag the scores to 3-3. Scheepers dropped her serve for the second time in the eighth game but immediately
snatched it back in the very next game to reach 4-5.She couldn’t do anything more in the set as Williams hammered a decisive break of serve to seal the first set at 6-4.
The following set was an all-American show, with the top seed contender dominating every minute of it. Williams broke her opponent in her every single serve game and rocketed away to victory with a bagel at 6-0. She will face the
ninth seed Romanian, Sorana Cirstea, in the semi-final rounds.
