Serena Williams ruthlessly puts aside Vera Zvonareva in round three – London Olympics 2012
World number four, Serena Williams, bombarded the barrage of winners to devastate the 13th ranked Russian, Vera Zvonareva, in the pre-quarterfinal clash on the eve of Wednesday. She registered straight sets score line, 6-1,
6-0 to roll into the last eight of the London Olympics at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon.
It was the 10th encounter between the two experienced athletes and the 27-year-old Russian had won just three of the last nine. So, it was obvious that the fourth seed American will again post a thumping score line especially
considering her recent form that includes a 13-match unbeaten run ever since the inception of the Wimbledon Championships in June.
Williams was thrilled to play on an indoor grass court and confessed, "Indoors, grass, it doesn't get better than this. Grass is a dream court, but then to play indoors on grass? Oh my God, it's crazy. I was nervous going into
the match. I didn't speak to anyone. I had a bad practice. I thought, 'Gosh I'm stressed out.' But I think I played better today, and even in my second round, than any match I played at Wimbledon. I was playing unbelievable. I felt good. I was relaxed. I felt
no pressure out there. I had no idea I would play like this. I was a little surprised."
The Russian starl was the victim of the bursting onslaught from the American that featured 32 winners including 12 cruising aces. This kind of result was expected and the whole brutal massacre started from the word go. Williams
broke serve in the opening game and took a 2-0 lead upfront.
She allowed just one serve hold for the Russian before bagging two straight breakpoints from the last three games of the opening set to end the first phase in quick succession. Trailing one set down, Zvonareva knew she was up for
another embarrassing run of play.
The shaky start to the second set from Williams was soon turned over into a barrage of thumping winners that featured three breakpoints on the trot and some marvellous aces ending the overall encounter in just 51 minutes from the
start of play.
The Russian managed to win just 23 of the rallies from the 76 total points contested on the grass courts of Wimbledon.
Williams has knocked-out the bronze medallist from the last edition of the tournament and inches a step closer where she faces-off against the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.
