Serena Williams seeded 28 in the US Open 2011: Curse or Blessing? – Tennis Special
The USTA disclosed they will not be changing the seeding policy just for Serena Williams even though, she has shown a tremendous improvement in her performances over the summer hard court season. The US Open, which is the only
talked about event during the summer is only a week away and starts from the 29th of August to the 14th of September 2011, at the all time famous; USTA Billie Jean National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, New York.
The former world ‘numero uno’ has revealed a striking enhancement in her routine over this year’s hard summer season. Although, she didn’t play in many tournaments, the ones she did play in, she was able to win the title. This
summer, surviving midsummer lapses, she played a total of sixteen hard court matches out of which she has won an ostentatious 15 and lost only one match, which was technically a withdrawal due to a toe injury.
At Stanford she wasn’t even seeded and got to play with top players like Maria Sharapova in the quarter final, not to mention the big hitting Sabine Lisicki in the semi final and to become a title holder at the final against Marion
Bartoli, whom she finally was able to avenge her loss against.
Moving on to the Rogers Cup held in Toronto, Williams had proved her mettle when she ousted the then world number 4, Victoria Azarenka in the semi final to see a clash against the Aussie Samantha Stosur in the final, who was yet
another easy prey for the hunting lioness. Again she was un-seeded and yet she proved to the world that she is back in her vintage form and was ready to take down all that came her way.
Now one wonders, does it really matter if Williams is seeded number 28? Well in my opinion no, it doesn’t. The 29 year old has proved time and time again that she is a true survivor and is, as Herbert Spencer coined the term ‘survival
of the fittest’. Not to mention, she jumped from 178 to 29 in the WTA rankings, alone atones for the fact that Serena Williams is one of a kind and is not only a laureate in tennis history but one of the most active female tennis players of today.
Chris Evert-Lloyd (Christine Marie) the former world number one, the 18 grand slam winner and the most loved tennis player, opinionated that the tournament erred by not hauling up Williams’ seeding but in true sincerity, does it
hurt America’s most loved female tennis player? Well of course not, because the top players will have battled out the armatures and it would truly be the cream of WTA that will finally make it to the quarter finals and eventually the best of 4 will leave their
mark by making history.
In all fairness this year’s fourth grand slam event, the US Open will be about competition and survival in its purest form. The players will have to duel with each other as they might get to combat with each other in earlier rounds
and then in the last of eight but then again, that is what defines competition. Whether Serena or any other player for that matter is seeded or not should not be an issue, it should be about focusing on the accolade at the end and finally, there is just one
word that comes to mind ‘Bring-it-on’.
