Serena Williams sets sight on her third Olympic medal – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, aims to take hold of the prime title at the Summer Olympic Games. Currently ranked at number four in the WTA Premier Rankings, Williams is mentioned amongst the greatest athletes
of the season. The 30-year-old veteran beamed to the horizon after thrashing the third-seeded Polish Agnieszka Radwanska in the Wimbledon Championship final at 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
After her Wimbledon title victory, Williams said: “It is exciting to be back so soon. Usually we have to wait 12 months to walk back on Centre Court and feel that moment that we felt, so I’m going to be really excited to
have that quick turnaround and get back on the grass where I love to play.”
According to many, Williams is the ideal candidate for the gold medal. She had a remarkable performance in the history of 14 Grand Slam titles over 14 seasons. The American woman has a consistent game plan, which slowly builds
momentum. Her competitive passion serves to her advantage, confusing her rivals on all sorts of surfaces. She is known to disclose a little too much about herself, hence known as one of the most famous sportswoman in the game.
Her game had declined in the past but this season her game picked momentum to the optimum level. She achieved the remarkable rate from being able to go up from number 180 to 16 and finally to the Top-4. However, gold medal
in the singles is the only title she has not won so far.
In a press conference, Williams said: “A gold medal would mean a lot to me, but I can’t put all my hopes and dreams on just that. But it would mean a lot and I’d like to get one.”
The former US Open champion is in sublime form and will most likely be in the finals of London Olympics. The top-seeded world number one, Victoria Azarenka, also lost to Williams at the Wimbledon semi-finals. However, the
second favourite after Williams is the world number three, Maria Sharapova. The Russian, previously ranked number one this season will surely be a tough competitor to beat. Sharapova, being top-seeded player at Wimbledon, highly hopes to win the gold medal
on the same venue later this month.
Williams, as proven to be the most influential player after securing the Stanford title and dominated the season by a lead with 38-3 records and a total of 4 titles. Her determination has no comparison. She said: "It's not
all about tennis. The best of the best are at the Olympics."
The American player has struggled immensely at the start of this season but has got into the position of claiming glory at the Olympics in London. No doubt she will be the hot favourite once she steps on the grass courts
of the All England Tennis Club.
