Serena Williams signs up for Brisbane International 2013 – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, will commence her new season at the Brisbane International tournament. In a press release from the officials of the tournament, it is made clear that the third ranked American will join
in the likes of the reigning French Open Champion, Maria Sharapova, and the ninth ranked Aussie star, Samantha Stosur, who have already confirmed their participation in the campaign.
Williams stated in a press conference that was followed up after a contract signup, “I love the tournament, it’s great. [The Brisbane International] it helps me prepare. I get a great tournament with tough field. I had so much
fun this year but unfortunately it ended fast for me with a disaster of an injury, I want to do well there [in Brisbane]. The city was great, I did a lot of shopping and I stayed in a great hotel.”
It has been a terrific season for the American 31-year-old powerhouse. She won seven titles and lost just six matches in the entire season. She bagged the Family Circle Cup at Charleston and followed it up with a magnificent run
in the Mutua Madrid Open. Williams added another Wimbledon title to take her tally to 14 Grand Slam titles at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
She continued to stay unbeaten during the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford and managed to clinch the maiden singles Olympics Gold Medal at London as well. Williams powered down the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka,
in a terrific three-setter at the US Open final to lift the 15th Grand Slam trophy of her career; ended the year with a Women Tennis Association Championships trophy at Istanbul.
Williams is not the highest ranked player in the world but definitely the unofficial favourite in each tournament she starts. She will begin the campaign in Brisbane as the favourite contestant despite the inclusion of the superior
ranked Russian blonde, Maria Sharapova, who is expected to be the top seed contestant for the event.
The Brisbane International tournament will be contested at the Queensland Tennis Centre and begins from 30th December and continues until the 6th of January.
