Serena Williams silent at Caroline Wozniacki’s imitation prank – Tennis News
An exhibition tournament on the hard courts of Sao Paolo was held for the sheer entertainment of local crowd and the top class tennis athletes indeed served the purpose of it. In particular, former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki,
performed a ‘controversial’ impersonation of the American powerhouse, Serena Williams, in her exhibition match. The Dane contender has been in the headlines of tennis news for the last two days because of this incident, some fans strongly criticising her and
the other looking at it as a mere funny thing.
Wozniacki was playing against the Russian diva, Maria Sharapova, when she padded up her shorts and top with towels to look like Williams. She played a point in that particular disguise, creaming extremely loud on playing her each
stroke and trying to impersonate Williams as much as she could. The local crowd cheered to her imitation prank and it appeared to be a hit at that moment. The Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, was also present at the arena and even he couldn’t stop laughing at
Wozniacki’s performance.
Some strong criticism came from some Williams’ fans, who rated Wozniacki’s prank to be disrespectful. According to a poll conducted on Huffington Post’s Black Voices section, 40 per cent believed that her impersonation of Williams
was racist. However, 38 per cent of the voters concluded it as non-racial, while the other 21 per cent were not sure about it.
On the other hand, no reaction has come from Williams as yet. In fact, when ABCNews.com tried to take Williams’ perspective on this incident, her representative plainly declined to pass any comment. Perhaps Williams is too busy
focusing on her upcoming campaigns or she didn’t see Wozniacki’s act as ethical. The truth can only be told by the American super star herself but she is silent on this matter so far.
Wozniacki’s representative has told the media that there is no such tension between the two former world number one players and they are very good friends as before. He cited: “It was all in good fun as Serena is one of her closest
friends on tour.”
“I know they are friends, but still, inside it does something to me, because we’ve been made fun of for so long for different parts of our bodies,” co-host Sherri Shepherd commented on this issue. “And to see Serena Williams reduced
to this, I don’t like it.”
However, Elisabeth Hasselbeck stated it was a mere joke for the entertainment of the crowd. “I think this is inside stuff that they always do,” she said
So there are mixed views about this impersonation prank of Wozniacki and it can only be resolved after Williams come up to give her own views about it.
