Serena Williams slays Caroline Wozniacki to enter semis – London Olympics 2012
In a blockbuster quarter-final clash between two former world number one stars, Serena Williams crippled Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki with a bagel at the London Olympics 2012 on Thursday. She clobbered a 6-0, 6-3 victory against the top Dane to cruise into
the semi-finals at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club held in Wimbledon, Great Britain.
The American number one, Williams, displayed solid tennis throughout the venture at this major sports event held after every four years. Battling each other for the sixth times, the American not only extended her lead in the head-to-head series by 5-1 against
Wozniacki but also booked a spot in the final four.
Williams commented in a courtside interview after crushing the Dane:
"It wasn't a quick first set - it was 32 minutes, it's not as if it was 15 minutes. She was playing really tough. But I know I can rally up to a hundred balls if necessary, and when you're playing Caroline you have to be ready to do that. She's so consistent
- she was No.1 for a reason. No matter what happened, I'm in a medal round now so I'm very excited."
Seeded fourth in the tournament, Williams went berserk after entering Games of x*x Olympiad. She blasted powerful forehands and backhands to reel off all six games in a row, eventually sealing the opener with a bagel.
The 30-year-old kept momentum rolling in the follow-up set and swiftly held her entire serves without facing any real threat. She got the breakthrough in the fourth game and clicked the set with a 6-3 win.
Next in line for the veteran is the world number one, Victoria Azarenka, who stomped over seventh seeded Angelique Kerber in straight sets to set up this clash.
"I love playing Victoria," Williams reflected about her next match-up against the Belarusian top. "I have nothing to lose. She is World No.1. That's what I love, playing when there's no pressure. It will be fun."
Williams lead 8-1 in the head-to-head series against the top seed. She conquered Azarenka on her last six meetings including four in straight sets.
