Serena Williams slays Sara Errani to enter final – French Open 2013
Top seed, Serena Williams, blasted past last year’s runner-up, Sara Errani, with a bagel at the Roland Garros 2013 on Thursday.
She jolted down a 6-0, 6-1 victory against the Italian star to power into the final round at this second Grand Slam event taking place in Paris, France.
The American number one dominated throughout the battle and eventually carved out the victory in 46 minutes. After stealing the show, Williams extended her lead in the head-to-head series by 6-0 against the world number five.
She said, “Those stats are really good, and very consistent. But for me I didn't go out there and feel great - for me, it was more like let's just see what happens and just try to do the best I can. Sara's a really great girl. I really, really like her.
I love her fighting spirit. I really like her as a person. But when you go out on the court, you just have to play and forget about who you're playing.”
The world number one, Williams went berserk in the start of the match. She reeled off six games and pulled out the opener with a bagel in 21 minutes. The American hammered 18 winners and spilled only seven double faults in this set. She was never threatened
with any breakpoint and converted three out of four break opportunities to her advantage.
Williams maintained her intensity in the following set. She broke the Italian’s opening serve and jumped to a 3-0 lead. After Errani came on the score board for the first time in the fourth game, the 31-year-old stroke out last three games and sealed the
set with a breadstick. She smacked 22 winners this time and committed only five unforced errors. In addition to this, Williams again held her serves without facing any breakpoint and cashed two out of three break chances to earn the glory.
With this victory, Williams progressed into her 20th Grand Slam final. She has a 15-4 Grand Slam win-loss record. However, the American has conquered just one French Open title. In addition to this, the American veteran is on a spectacular 30 match winning
streak. This is the longest winning streak of her career and third longest in the new millennium.
Next in queue for Williams is the defending champion, Maria Sharapova. The second seed rallied past the Belarusian number one, Victoria Azarenka, in a three-set thriller to set-up this match. She notched up a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 victory against the third seed
in two hours and 10 minutes.
