Serena Williams snails past Yaroslava Shvedova to the last eight – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Golden Set record holder, Yaroslava Shvedova, fought like a true warrior against the former world number one, Serena Williams, in the battle for a place in the last eight of the Wimbledon Championships. However, her epic resistance
was finally broken by the American number one in three sets; winning the match 6-1, 2-6, 7-5.
Nothing could stop Williams from smashing aces on the trot. However, compared to 23 aces from last match; she managed 12 in this one but some of the serves were just merely met by the Kazakh wildcard entrant that could have been
easily been an ace if there was some other contender. Shvedova didn’t fall back and smashed seven aces in the match to keep her head up until the end.
It was all Williams from the word go until the end of the opening set. The sixth ranked American took 26 minutes at the Court Two of All England Club to finish off the opening set and hinted at an early closure to her fourth round
draw. However, an epic turnaround in the proceedings witnessed two back-to-back breakthroughs for the Kazakh who won the second set in surprising fashion; taking 34 minutes at the grass courts.
Both players were meeting for the first time in their professional career so there were no nerves at all. Williams came off with 23 aces third round thriller whilst the 65th ranked Kazakh won the opening set against
the French Open finalist, Sara Errani, without losing a point. So, it was a contest between 13-singles Grand Slam winner against the unique record holder.
A supreme capitalization on serve was witnessed in the final set. However, the American had three breakpoints in the ninth game but she failed to convert either of them. Shvedova was pumped up and fought without any pressure. However,
she was unable to hold serve in the 11th game of the match and couldn’t force Williams to drop serve and keep the match alive.
Shvedova received a standing ovation for another startling show at the Grand Slam Championships. Williams will contest her next round match with the winner of the match between Francesca Schiavone and Petra Kvitova.
